Dreaming of flowers in the frigid snowy days of winter is enchanting in so many ways. Exploring their inherent beauty brings me infinite joy. Past years I have elected to purchase wildflower seeds instead of cut flowers for Valentines day to benefit pollinators and wildlife after winter snow has melted away. What is it about flowers that brings us so much joy and makes us feel so loved? What else can make us feel this way with having a better relationship with the earth? There is something so sweet and beautiful about having such delicate beauty at your fingertips… flowers are so precious and special beyond words.
If and when I choose to have flowers in the winter, I strive for best practices and source them as locally as I can find. Generally, you can find tulips grown locally, in my case that’s in and around New York, and New Jersey. This year I went with sourcing flowers in February with a local wholesale floral distributor. I know, not my go to… I would have loved to grow them myself if I could have. I am so grateful that I was able to choose where my flowers came from within sourcing from a local Wholesale distributor, their tulips came with an option from Holland or Canada. The closer flowers are sourced the less pesticides are used and the longer the blooms last. I obviously went with Canada for Tulips in this instance. Snapdragons and supporting flowers from the southern states, and other Greens and flowers that grow naturally this time of year in California. I did include sporadic garden roses which I hope to grow on my flower farm this upcoming season.
I’m so glad I provided some lovely flowers to my favorite local shop in Woodstock, Unfiltered Wines! Flowers and wine for your Valentine- how sweet! I also hosted a lovely workshop where we made beautiful arrangements at Scribner’s Lodge on Hunter mountain just in time for Valentines day. I hope to continue to bring you sustainable flowers throughout the seasons! Something I’m looking forward to Next February, more Local Farm Flowers! I saw the most precious flowers, a mix of delicate Tulips and Anemones in the most warm and cheerful pastel colors surrounded with elegant bright green stems. They immediately took my breath away and I thought that would be more than enough to bring joy in the winter. Other local farms were forcing gorgeous tulips in coolers and offering pink pussy willow branches that were so precious. Next year I will search for even more local flowers for a new tradition of February Flowers and Branches from Local Farms -flowers that make you feel so incredible and so much love for this earth. I’m so excited to continue to provide my local community with sustainable flowers throughout the seasons! Thank you all for supporting my dream for a more sustainable future on this earth. Lets learn how to grow together and do the best we can with what we have access to.
